    CHAPTER 1. DEFINITION. According to Drs. Copland* and Hughes Bennett,f whose language almost coincides, apoplexy is a loss of consciousness, feeling, and voluntary motion, or, in' other words, a suspension of the functions of the brain—respiration and circulation being more or less disturbed. This definition closely accords with that' of Cullen, Motus voluntarii fere omnes imminuti, cum sopore plus minusve profando, superstite motu cordis et arteriarum.| The former is the more com- prehensive, yet neither will alone enable us to distin- guish apoplexy from numerous afiections of the brain and nervous system; for example, from epilepsy, urge- mia, severe cerebral concussion, narcotism, and other organic and dynamic disturbances.
