    The total registered deaths, 781, compares with 751 for 1962. The comparable death rate (per 1,000 of the population) was 11.2 compared with 12.2 for England and Wales. The deaths certified as being due to heart disease were 255 and 122 were due to coronary disease. Cancer caused 115 deaths of which 25 were due to cancer of the lung, 21 of which were male. There were 17 deaths from cancer of the lung in 1962. Vascular lesions of the nervous system caused 142 deaths. At death 73.7 per cent had survived to over 65 years of age and 51.7 per cent to over 75 years of age. This shows the children had maintenance injections against diphtheria and tetanus. 208 children were vaccinated against smallpox and 17 were re-vaccinated. Oral vaccine for protection against poliomyelitis is almost universally used now. The procedure is extremely simple and consists of the swallowing of 3 drops of the vaccine on a lump of sugar or in a syrup. The vaccine is available for those up to the age of 40 years. No cases of poliomyelitis occurred in the area during the year and once again the total number of cases notified in England and
