The woodcut plates published by Maschenbaur in 1706 are described on the title page as by Titian. The attribution of the Vesalian plates to Titian was one that first developed in the seventeenth century but today they are generally accepted as the work of his student, the Fleming Jan Stephan van Calkar, who is named as the artist responsible in early sources such as Giorgio Vasari's Vite of 1568
