If the consequences I have just drawn be correct, the disease must consist of some phy- sical alteration in the brain, or in some obstruc- tion or other in the action of that organ. A few days ago I had two horses afflicted with immobility examined, and my conjecture was perfectly correct. In both, the brain was evidently diseased and the cerebellum per- fectly sound. It then appears demonstrated, that these two opposite powers of the brain and of the cere- bellum exist in animals ; and that in some peculiar cases these powers may resist the influence of the will.
