    the incipient stage of the disease, and again, unfor- tunately, when the exception is the case the disease .may be so limited that a corrector positive diagnosis lis not immediately made. These then are the reasons for the enormous fatality from pulmonary consump- tion. But all things considered, the question of recovery- rests much with the patient. If he will constantly study his condition and with such knowledge lend intelligent assistance to his medical adviser even in the smallest details of treatment and management, he is doing much to win permanent recovery. But if, on the contrary, the opposite conditions prevail, it is scarcely reasonable to expect a favorable result. Tht more perfectly the pulmonary invalid understands himself, the better he appreciates the various phe- nomena associated with the development and progress of his disease, the better his chances of recovery, if he takes advantage of such knowledge. The fallacy of keeping such invalids ignorant of their true condition is now generally recognized, and it is fortunate it is so. The various chapters of rliis book are addressed to the consumptive in person, and while discussing what, should not be done, the author has endeavored to
