Letter to the Wellcome Institute from Dr J.P. Bound, 8 March 1977: "The artist Ward was a soldier who developed sprue himself and was a patient in the ward. The cartoon suddenly appeared on our desk one day. In peace time he had been a cartoonist on a local paper. I seem to remember it was somewhere in Kent, possibly Rochester, but I cannot be sure about this now." Possibly by Thomas William (Bill) Ward: see obituary in The Times, 12 August 2000
