About this work

Description

Lalli Singh is a 6-week baby girl born in a small village close to New Delhi with a severe facial malformation known as craniofacial duplication. It gives her the appearance of having two faces. The Singh family belong to the lowest social caste; the other villagers think Lalli might be a Goddess so the family are reluctant to give her any kind of medical treatments even though she is life-threateningly sick. Dr. Ashley D'Cruz from Narayana Children's Hospital goes to visit the family and encourages them to allow Lalli to receive treatment at the hospital. The family stall their decision for too long so that by the time she is taken to hospital she is gravely ill. The programme is fascinating as it reveals an extremely rare facial abnormality in a living child as well as showing Indian rural life, family values and attitudes to medicine. Against the odds Lalli seemed to be recovering but then suddenly suffered a heart attack and died. After her death she is buried like a Goddess and her family build a temple to her memory outside their home.
