According to the lettering, an episode in the play by Heinrich von Kleist, Der zerbrochne Krug (The broken jug), wood engraving in the French translation La cruche cassée, translated by Alfred de Lostalot, Paris: Firmin Didot, 1884 (possibly Act 10 of the play). The play is set in the Netherlands
