No. 284 DISEASES.—The extent to which they prevailed in Pauper, Charitable, and Public Institutions of Manchester and Salford. In the week terminating on Saturday, the 6th inst., 1,343 new cases of disease and injuries occasioned by accidents were observed in the public practice of Manchester and Salford ; in the two preceding weeks the respective numbers were 1,370 and 1,200. The deaths in the course of the week in public practice were unusually numerous, amount¬ ing to 75, or 1 in every 17 cases. There were 83 seizures from Continued Fever, one-half of them are referred to as ex¬ amples of Typhus. Fourteen cases of the latter disease were admitted into the Manchester Workhouse and 12 more into the Chorlton. Under Diseases of the Respiratory Organs there is an increase of 26 cases; in the corresponding week of 1865 they were still more numerous. Of 7 cases of Small Pox, observed in the course of the week, 3 were admitted as In- Patients of the Royal Infirmary. Scarlet Fever, though by no means general, appears to be lurking in certain quarters of the town. Thus 5 cases came under the observation of the Medical Officers of the Salford Dispensary, and 4 more were admitted into the Chorlton Workhouse. Whooping-Cough, though still very general in Salford, appears to be losing ground in Manchester. No other disease occurred to any unusual extent. DEATHS.—The Number Registered in Manchester and Salford, and their Causes. Last week 300 deaths were registered in the eleven districts of the Sanitary Association. The return, though lamentably high, is nevertheless an improvement upon the two which preceded it. It is satisfactory to observe a decided decrease in the mortality arising from Fever. Possibly this favourable result may, to some extent, be due to the high winds which have prevailed during the last few weeks. By this means the atmosphere of crowded courts and alleys may have become purified. Twenty-four persons appear to have died of Whooping Cough. The deaths from Diseases of the Respiratory Organs fell from 105 to 95. In London, according to the last return of the Registrar General, the deaths fell short of the estimated number by 65. At the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, the mean temperature of the air in the week was 43*2°; at the Royal Infirmary it was 41*5°; at Eccles 4L2°; and at Old Trafford 40-8°.
