    FOREWORD \ As the first Chairman of the West Ham Group Hospital Management Committee I am proud to write this foreword to the First Annual Report of the Committee. When my colleagues and I accepted the invitation of the North East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board to serve on this new Committee, we were to a great extent strangers to one another, but we had one common denominator in that we were all animated with a keen desire to provide the best possible hospital service for the patients in this area. Now, after the first year, we are working as a team and in spite of many diffi¬ culties and disappointments, our enthusiasm is greater than ever. This is my opportunity to pay a sincere tribute to the Mem¬ bers of the Hospital Management Committee and of the House Committees for the devoted service which they have given so cheerfully and to express my special thanks to the Chairmen of Sub-Committees, who have not spared themselves. Lastly my thanks are due to all categories of staff in all the hospitals and clinics of this group for the excellent way in which they have combined to maintain a high standard of effici¬ ency in this difficult period of transition.
