After an engraving by Desnoyers that was exhibited in 1827 (Wellcome Collection no. 563575i), and which followed a drawing that Desnoyers had made in 1823, when the painting by Raphael was the property of William Gordon Coesvelt in London. Coesvelt sold the painting to Tsar Nicolas I in 1836, and it was acquired in 1931 by Andrew Mellon for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
