Gentlemen, Some days since I was favoured with a copy of your Committee’s pamphlet on the Public Wells of Glas- gow, containing Reports by Dr. Robert Dundas Thomson, (chemical assistant to Dr. Thomas Thomson, our distinguish- ed Professor of Chemistry in the College,) and Dr. Frederick Penny, Professor of Chemistry in the Andersonian Institution. Observing in the newspapers that the subject of these wells is still occupying the attention of your honourable Board, and conceiving that many of the statements in this pamphlet are likely to mislead your judgment, and to create unnecessary and even mischievous alarm in the minds of the citizens of Glasgow, I beg leave to solicit the indulgence of addressing you on the nature and value of the chemical evi- dence and medical opinions which have been given with regard to the ingredients and the sanatory influence of the water of these wells. If this printed document of your Committee concerned matters of a private nature, however important, I should feel the impropriety of obtruding upon you the opinions of an anonymous correspondent, and I should have sought some other means and opportunity of expressing my sentiments on the erroneous assertions and mistaken views which it con- tains.
