This work could be by one of the artists active in Rome called I Bamboccianti. The work of Jan Miel is similar, and the same motif of a cloth over a pole seen in this work appears in another painting by him (I Bamboccianti, Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne, 1991, catalogue no. 24.6, pp. 245-7, ill. p. 247). The works of Pieter van Laer and Michelangelo Cerquozzi are also very close in style to this. Two very similar works are at Christ Church Oxford, attributed to Van Laer but possibly by Cerquozzi. In one of them (called "The quack dentist" at Christ Church), the same kind of banner appears in the background.
