    CHAP. III. The brain is the organ of the mind. The proofs in support cf tins position are as follows: 1. Without biain there is no manifestation of feel- ings or of intellectual functions. 2. If the cerebral organization be defective, the manifestations of the mind are also defective; as happens'in many idiots from birth. 3. If in the healthy state the development of the brain be very considerable, the manifestations of the aheetivc and intellectual powers are very energetic. 4. The manifestations of the mind follow the ordinary or extraordinary growth of the brain. This oigan is pulpy in young children, and the mental powers are scarcely perceptible; but in proportion as it becomes perfect, the mental fac- uhies appear; in its state cf maturity, the mental powers arrive at the greatest energy, and in pro- portion as it grows old and weak, the energy of the mental faculties diminishes also. 5.
