    s The whole duty of those whose professions It is to endeavour to alleviate the pains and ail- ments of others, is to act to the full extent of that confined power which is allowed to them, in eradicating-, by the most soothing and most effec- tual means, the cause of whatever is unnatural to the human frame. Various Diseases require various remedies, and this disease requires, in an aggravated state, the most sound judgment in its treatment. It cannot possibly be set on the same footing with the generality of diseases, for this special reason ; other disorders that the human frame is subject to, with the exception of few, will subside with the aid of a little assistance, sometimes entirely without;—Nature will act for herself:—but in the Venerea] Disease no abatement ever takes place : it is a poison of the rankest nature, and another poison must be thrown with a degree of velocity
