To the young practitioner, and to him, particularly, who has not had every advantage of education, it is more confidently offer- ed ; and the author hopes tliat to such it will not be un- acceptable. It is intended to afford a compendious view of the imjjrovcd Editions of the tliree British Pharmacopojias, pointing out the circumstances in which they agree toge- ther, and those which are ])cculiar to each of tliem. The work of the London College has been taken *as the text book, and the formula; of the coni])ound articles, conse- quently, are quoted from it oidy; for if tliose of each of the Pliarmacopceias had been separately given, the cha- racter of the volume would have been altered ; and in- stead of being a pocket manual, it would have swollen to the size and form of a Dispensatory. Under each article of the vegetable kingdom, the ]>lace it holds in the systems of X,iima:us andJussieu is stated, its original place of growth pointed out, and the term of its existence marked in the characters used by botanical wri- ters. The chemical components of the different substances are taken from the Systems of Chemistry of the author’s friends. Doctor J. Murray, iind Doctors Thomas Thomson, the jjapers of Sir Humphry Davy, the Annales de Chimiv, and the valuable analyses of Berzelius; and the properties of most of the vegetable productions from the Materia Me- dica a. liegno Veejetahili of Dcryius ; iind from personal ob- servation. With regard to their medical properties and doses, tlie best writers have been consulted, and every assistance de- rived from the Practical Synopsis of Doctor Pearson; u hile any peculiar clfccts observed in the course of the author’s own ])iac(icc have been cautiously adopted.
