    AMERICAN CENTAURY-Continued. as to call for tonics. Useful as a tonic in slow convalescence, and ia dyspepsia and other diseases of debility. American Centaury herb, compressed in ounce packages for retail- ing purposes. PREPARATION. Fluid Extract American Centaury,—Not miscible with water. Dose, 1-2 to 1 fluidrachm {2 to 4 C. c.) AMERICAN COLUMBO. Frasera carolinensis, Walter. (Root.) Properties.—Tonic and slightly aperient. In overdoses purgative and emetic. Useful in stomachic and general debility, and in all cases where a mild tonic is indicated, particularly in irritated conditions of the digestive organs. American Columbo root, compressed in pound packages for retail- ing purposes. PREPARATIONS. Fluid Extract American Columbo. Miscible with water without material precipitation. Dose, 20 drops to a fluidrachm (1.3 to 4 C. c.) Fraserin, a so-called Concentration,* a powdered preparation from American Columbo root. Dose, 1 to 3 grains (0.0(3 to 0.19 Gm.) AMERICAN HELLEBORE. Veratrum viride (U. S. P.), Alton. (Rhizome.) Synonyms .—Green Hellebore, Swamp Hellebore, Itch Weed, Indian Poke; Veratre Vert., Fr.; Griiner Germer, Ger. Properties.— Poisonous. The chief use of this agent is to depress the action of the heart and to lower the vaso-motor tonus. Very favorable results are claimed in the treatment of simple cardiac hypertrophy, irritable heart, aneurism, and in acute parenchymatous congestions; indicated in cerebral hyperaemia. The hypertrophy of the heart and the abdominal arterial tension which accompany the chronic form of albuminuria, are said to be alleviated by its use. When there are valvular lesions, and when the heart is enfeebled from any cause, this agent is inadmissible. — Bartholow. Administration.—As the effect of the drug quickly reaches its maxi- mum, the dose must not be at longer intervals than two hours. The. re- cumbent posture must be rigidly enforced, and the drug should only be given by competent hands. Antidote—Morphine and laudanum, in full doses, given in strong coffee, and alcoholic stimulants. American Hellebore Root, U. S. F., compressed in pound pack- ages for retailing purposes. PREPARATIONS AND FORMUUE. Extracts. Fluid Ext. inter, Hellebore, U.S.P.—Not miscible with water. Dose, 1 drop (0.03 0. c), gradually increased until the desired effect on the circulation is produced. Solid Extract American Hellebore.—1 part equals 5 of root. Dose, 1-8 to 1-4 grain (.008 to .016 Gm.) Normal Liquidt American Hellebore. Standard, i0 C. c. of the Normal Liquid require for complete precipi- tation of the alkaloids 3 C. c. of Mayer's solution. Dose, one drop (0.03 Gm.) gradually increased if necessary. Fills Veratrum Viride Extract, 1-4, 1-2 grain. American Hellebore is also an ingredient of pills, numbers 880 and 261, see list of Pill Formulae appended.
