Biographical note

The British Society for Cardiovascular Research was founded in 1973 as the Cardiac Muscle Research Group. From the start the guiding principles of the group were that it would be open to all, there would be no publication, and each meeting would be dedicated to a single topic. It was decided that there should be two meetings each year, one in the Spring, and one in the Autumn, along with occasional additional workshops on specific topics.

1987 was a year of big changes for the Society. The name was changed from the Cardiac Muscle Research Group to the British Society for Cardiovascular Research, in order to better reflect the changing emphasis of the organisation. The same year saw the foundation of the Bulletin of the British Society for Cardiovascular Research which began to publish meeting abstracts, along with book reviews and short articles. 1987 also saw the introduction of an annual Society dinner.

The Society has strong links with many academic societies, including the British Cardiac Society, the Biochemical Society, the Physiological Society and the European Society of Cardiology.
