    recent Cruelty to Animals Act/ passed in 1876, vivi- secting and all painful experiments on dogs and other animals are prohibited, with a few exceptions for scientific purposes, under a penalty of £50 for the first offence, and a further penalty of £100, or three months’ imprisonment, for any subsequent offence; but this restriction does not apply to experiments per- formed by lecturers and others with the aid of anmsthetics, provided urari be not the anjesthetic employed.
