![[ * ] THE DEFINITION AND HISTORY OF OPTHALMY. . v, WHAT is usually meant by the term Op- thalmy, is a rednefs and inflammation, with pain, of the tunica conjunctivaor that mem- brane which covers the anterior part of the eye, where it ceases to be transparent, and lines the inside of the lids ; with pain of the eye, on exposure to light; for though an inflammation will fometimes arise in the coats and globe of the eye itself, as a pri- mary disease, yet that is fo very feldom the case, comparatively with the frequency of the inflammation of the tunica conjunctiva, as not, commonly, to be feparately consi- dered.
