About this work

Description

Haemoglobinuric falciparum malaria (blackwater fever) This is a medium power view of a section of kidney from a person with blackwater fever due to malaria. The renal tubules are separated by oedema; the tubules contain pink-red haemoglobin casts; the epithelium of the tubules is focally degenerate (thinned and without nuclei). This is acute tubular necrosis with haemoglobinuria. H&E stain.
