Saturday Studio: performing medicine

Youth event

Drop in

Saturday 18 November 2017

Drop by to work with professional surgeons from Imperial College London in a series of workshops that explore the links between surgery, medicine and creativity. In each workshop you'll have the opportunity to learn about three key skills that are involved in surgery: teamworking, sewing and performance. The workshops will be led by a team of surgeons and craftsmen, led by Roger Kneebone from Imperial College London.

1. Sewing: a surgeon and a three-dimensional embroiderer (Fleur Oakes) will show how techniques from textiles and fashion design are used in joining human tissue together. You will try your hand at stitching, knotting and handling threads

2. Teamworking: A leading puppeteer (Rachel Warr) will show you how to work collaboratively to move objects and materials, showing how surgery requires clinicians to ‘read’ one another’s bodies while operating

3. Surgery as performance: a leading close-up magician (Will Houstoun) will show how the skills involved in manipulating cards and coins must be combined with the skills of capturing an audience’s attention - drawing out similarities with doctors meetings and surgery by showing you how to perform a magic effect

How to get involved

These workshops are for young people aged 14-19 only. There are 25 spaces in each session - first come, first served. Due to the popularity of last year's surgical session we will run an early sign-up.

Sign-up for all three sessions (11:00, 14:00 and 16:00) will open at 10am in the Studio on Level 1. Sessions will be filled on a first come, first served basis. If you secure a place you will be given a ticket for the session. Attendees with tickets will need to wait outside the Forum in the Medicine Now gallery 15 minutes before the start of their session. Your place will be given to someone on our waiting list if you have not arrived 5 minutes before the start of your session.

We will operate a waiting list on the day, which will open 30 minutes ahead of each session. If you would like to join the waiting list you will need to come to the Studio on Level 1 to register. You will only be able to queue in this space 30 minutes before a workshop starts. If you arrive earlier than this we will ask you to explore our galleries until we open.

This event is FREE.
