In the summer of 1837 when Queen Victoria ascended the British throne, a strange new idea wafted across the English Channel from France. In London, distinguished physician John Elliotson was the only British doctor to take mesmerism seriously. He staged spectacular demonstrations on his patients at University College Hospital which created sensational headlines and ultimately brought him disaster.

Best-selling author Wendy Moore (The Knife Man, Wedlock) talks about her new book, The Mesmerist, which tells the story of Elliotson’s battle to spread the word about mesmerism – hypnotism as it’s known today – in the face of furious opposition.
