The Early Music Show
Sunday 15 October 2017
Harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani and cornettist Helen Roberts demonstrate the extraordinary level of memory baroque musicians took for granted in everyday performance. Plus, monks from Downside Abbey are on hand to explain the techniques medieval monks used to memorise vast swathes of plainchant and prayer, and Mahan investigates a 15th-century manuscript from Wellcome's Library, where chants are used to help memorise the symptoms, causes and cure of various conditions.
