Eye tests ephemera. Box 1.

A short film which describes the development of eye care and spectacles. The film describes, with the aid of diagrams, how sight works. A test for colour blindness is performed. An optometrist tests sight and fits glasses. There is a waiting room. The film is about the National Eye Service which was established by the BMA.

The British Optical Association year book. 1927.

This colour amateur film is described as being Persian in origin. The opening sequence is a sign, in Persian, 'Iranian Institut for Health Science Research' in the County of Malayer. A group of presumably British doctors or optometrists set up a number of travelling eye clinics. They travel by land rover. There are small numbers of indigenous people (mostly men and children) in remote villages (there are barren looking mountains in the background). A group of children play 'knucklebones', a form of jacks made with sheep knucklebones. Women are treated in the clinic. Several people have cataracts removed. There is a sign in Persian with an English translation underneath; 'National Institute of Public Research'.

This short film is presented by Dr G. B Anderson, medical secretary for the British Medical Association. One of a number of films in the Wellcome Library from this collection which promotes the National Eye Service. There are a number of clips of eye examinations and spectacles being fitted.
