Zacchaeus, a "chief publican" or tax collector, promises to give half of his goods to the poor, "and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold" (Luke 19.8) Zacchaeus is unusual among the list of reluctantly penitent publicans in the New Testament in that he is not encouraged to give up everything; Jesus is happy with his pledge
