Human chromosomes from a patient with Hereditary
Liability to Pressure Palsy (a lesion of a spinal
root or peripheral nerve resulting from
compression). There is a deletion in chromosome 17
(17p11.2), which has been highlighted using a
fluorescent cosmid probe (red) from the PMP gene.
The chromosome 11 centromeres are green. The
chromosomes have been highlighted with fluorescent
probes that bind to specific sequences of DNA.

Chromosomes from a patient with isolated familial
aniridia. The chromosomes have been made
fluorescent with probes that bind to specific
sequences of DNA. A cosmid probe F02121 (red) shows
up the deletion in chromosome 11, and a green
fluorescent probe shows up the chromosome 11
centromeres.
This condition involves the developmental absence
of most of the iris. Its base is present on the
ciliary body, and often upsets the aqueous
outflow mechanism. Also called irideremia.

The FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridisation)
study is of a female heterozygous for a deletion
in the Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) gene. The
DMD cosmid probe is red, the X chromosome
centromeres are green.

This FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridisation)
study is of a patient with aniridia and a
cytogenetically visible deletion in chromosome 11,
11p13p15.1. The chromosome 11 centromeres are shown
in green.
The upper cell shows that the deletion includes
the aniridia gene (PAX6) (red) but does not
include the Wilm's tumour predisposition gene WT1
(shown red in lower cell).
This result suggests that this patient is at low
risk for developing Wilm's tumour.

This FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridisation)
study shows a female not deleted for a cosmid
(red) from within the Duchenne muscular dystrophy
(DMD) gene. See B0000324C for FISH study of female
with deletion. In a carrier female, this signal
would be missing from one of the X chromosomes.
