Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) crystals imaged by cross polarised light microscopy. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and is important for collagen formation and wound healing. A good source of vitamin C is found in a variety of fruit and vegetables including citrus friuts, brussels sprouts and broccoli. It is a water soluble vitamin that cannot be stored in the body so needs to be ingested regularly. A lack of Vitamin C causes scurvy. 100X image magnification.

False-coloured scanning electron micrograph of pollen grains from a venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). This carniverous plant eats insects and other small bugs. Pollen grains contain the male gamete and are produced in the anther. They are transferred from one flower to another (pollination) so that fertilisation of the female gametes can occur (sexual plant reproduction). Pollen is a common trigger of hay fever or seasonal allergies. Pollen grains are 100 microns in size across.

A light micrograph of a centric diatom. Diatoms are photosynthesising algae that live in most aquatic environments, both fresh and salt water. They are non-motile and are restricted to shallow waters as they require sunlight for photosythesis. A centric diatom is one that displays radial symmetry.

False-coloured scanning electron micrograph of a head louse clinging to a strand of human hair. Head lice (Pediculus) feed on human blood and live in close proximity to the scalp. They lay eggs (nits) in sacs which firmly attach to individual strands of hair near the base of the shaft. Width of image is 1 mm.
