What brought you to our website today?

A series of I, II and III programmes compiled together starting with an introduction to the case history of a patient, George Lister, who visits the doctor with his mother in 1940 aged 10 when they are interrupted by an air-raid. The examination proceeds in the shelter where he is prescribed bedrest for a swollen ankle. There is plenty of background information about the patient's lifestyle and back history. Thirty-six years later he returns to the doctor with pains in his chest. Part II resumes the story; the results of the chest x-ray and other tests are discussed by a doctor and consultant. He is prescribed beta blockers and a change in his lifestyle is recommended. Although he stops smoking he continues his stressful job as a ladies' panty-hose (tights) salesman. Six years later he has a tooth-ache; he is advised of the side-effects of anaesthetic and pain relief but later feels unwell and his wife calls the GP. In Part III, George feels better and goes out to celebrate. Unfortunately he over indulges in food and wine; subsequently he collapses and ends up in A&E. There is some debate about the exact nature of the problem with his heart. Whilst waiting for the consultant, he goes into cardiac arrest and dies.

Granuflex Hydroactive Granules is a new product by Squibb Surgicare which protects the surgical site. A number of American clinicians have researched the unique action of Granuflex. The benefits of the product are described. They have moisture reactive granules which protects the wound and prevents infection. The graphic images describe its action. A range of product booklets are available including a film 'An Environment for Healing' (not in the collection) also a film 'The Aetiology and Management of Leg Ulcers' (in the collection).

Liz Hudson, a young woman who is a keen competitive runner suffers from joint swelling and pain after exercise. After visits to her GP and the hospital over some time, her condition worsens, she eventually receives a diagnosis. The videos explore a number of alternative possibilities 1. Rheumatoid Arthritis, 2. Reiter's Syndrome, 3. Psoriatic Arthritis, 4. Ankylosing Spondylitis.

A film history of the struggle against infection after surgery. This is introduced by rostrum camera stills then, followed by a recreated sequence of Joseph Lister carrying out surgery including a time when the patient escaped from the operating theatre. The advent of anaesthesia revolutionised surgery, however, as the film goes onto articulate, there is still the scourge of sepsis or infection. Historical theories of infection are outlined including antiseptics. Asepsis is described and the story of how rubber gloves became adopted. There is a brief archive sequence of Alexander Fleming in colour smoking in his laboratory handling petri dishes. Sir Charles Illingworth and James Ross describe their first experience of antibiotics. The film describes the 'tragedy' of antibiotic usage; indiscriminate prophylactic use at low dosages. Surgeons, Mr Kennedy Browne and Mr David Rosin describe the decrease in efficacy of antibiotics. Professor Sidney Selwyn also contributes to this discussion. Staphylococcal infection in particular has risen through widespread use of broad spectrum antibiotics. Selwyn talks about drug resistant infections. Endotoxins are also outlined. There are surgical sequences throughout the film. Antiseptics and asepsis have returned in favour due to the 'casual' approach to infection in hospitals. In the closing sequences of the film, the opening historical sequences are revisited.
