Commonly known as Swine Flu, the new strain of Influenza A virus, subtype H1N1, was first identified in Mexico in April 2009. This respiratory disease subsequently spread globally and was declared a pandemic in June 2009 by WHO.
During that time, many coloured scientific images of the virus have appeared in the media. Jerram’s sculptures are created in response to such imagery. The artist believes artificial colouring of images affects what we think a virus looks like and means, often communicating fear. He chooses instead to present a model of the virus in a clean transparent form. The sculpture was made in collaboration with glassblowers Brian Jones and Norman Veitch.
