About this work

Description

As with the other 'Praeservativmann' caricatures, the text contrasts the variety of preventatives and cures that were suggested against the cholera with the helplessness of the individual in the face of the mysterious disease. The verse tells us that this mystery is a 'hard nut to crack'. The monkey has herbs hanging from its neck and in its hand

Lettering

[On membranous ball:] Cholera
