Artist Jason Wilsher-Mills presents a major solo exhibition, ‘Jason and the Adventure of 254’, his largest and most personal commission to date. It is a joyful exploration of the body, drawing on the artist’s experience of becoming disabled as a child.

Reimagining the gallery space as a hospital ward, Wilsher-Mills’ installation of sculptures, illustrations and interactive dioramas challenges cultural and societal perceptions surrounding disability, medicine and the human body. The exhibition is inspired by 1980s TV, as well as anatomical drawings in Wellcome Collection, and uses a kaleidoscope of colours with a touch of magic realism. It is a celebration of family and creativity expressed through Wilsher-Mills’ characteristic tongue-in-cheek humour.

Everyone is invited to explore ‘Jason and the Adventure of 254’. There are interactive push-button lights, and you can touch everything in the exhibition. To keep you and the artworks safe, please touch them gently and do not climb on the sculptures.

Throughout summer 2024 Wilsher-Mills will take over Wellcome Collection’s entrance lobby with works from the series ‘Jason and his Argonauts’ (2016 onwards).

This installation transports us back in time to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield on 1 August 1980 at 2.54pm, when 11-year-old Jason witnessed his parents being told of the autoimmune condition that paralysed him from the neck down. This figure represents Jason’s memory of what was happening to his body, his feet swollen to massive proportions to symbolise pain, and light signals depicting the neurological pathways from his brain to his body gone awry.

Jason can pinpoint the exact time of his diagnosis to 2.54pm, as it coincided with Sebastian Coe winning the 1500-metre race in the 1980 Moscow Olympics, which was being shown on the ward’s ever-present TV. 254 also happened to be Coe’s racing number. Here Seb Coe’s head has morphed into a TV, and he is pointing at the ‘Figure in the Bed’. The athlete is surrounded by toy soldiers and viruses, and is urging them to attack the figure.

Jason’s doctor explained his autoimmune condition as an army of soldiers living inside him that were attacking rather than defending him. Oversized toy soldiers wield viruses instead of guns and deliver them to the ‘Figure in the Bed’. Inflatable viruses are suspended in the air and cast ominous shadows in the space.

The ‘Figure in the Bed’s cutaway sections are inspired by Wellcome Collection’s historic anatomical drawings and reveal what is happening inside Jason’s body. The red wires, lights and colour scheme also reference the board game ‘Operation!’.

Calliper boots were one of the many painful adaptive technologies that Jason was given to wear during his childhood. Though they were intended to support his weight and train his ankles, he found them pointless and burdensome. He has since reclaimed them as a symbol of pride and identity by reimagining them as boots that he would choose to wear. They are emblazoned with the Union Jack flag – a nod to Coe representing Britain and an outward manifestation of Wilsher-Mills’ inner mod.

This 30-metre-long wallpaper charts the year that Jason spent in Pinderfields Hospital. Popular culture became the main way he kept track of time while he was in hospital. Imagery inspired by TV shows like ‘Batman’ and ‘Doctor Who’, and his favourite comic, The Beano, evoke a sense of 1970s nostalgia. He uses these influences to create a range of alter egos, such as Super Hands, whose images chart events of personal significance and his metamorphosis from boy to man.

Dioramas, reminiscent of the penny-arcade machines Wilsher-Mills remembers from family holidays to the seaside, light up when a button is pressed. They act as windows into the artist’s mind, illuminating some of his most formative experiences. ‘Painting With My Mouth’ acknowledges the pivotal role of Jason’s hospital education, without which he claims he would not have become an artist.

Family features strongly in the dioramas. They are rich in symbolism, denoting stages of transition such as puberty. ‘Mum as a Mermaid’ illustrates Wilsher-Mills’ memory of his mother swimming in the North Sea at night-time, lit up by jellyfish. ‘Uncle Dennis and the Inseminoids’ is an imaginary rendering of a 1981 sci-fi horror film that his uncle Dennis told him about during a hospital visit, where images from the film combine with memories of his treatment.

This drawing is just one of 400 that Wilsher-Mills made in preparation for this exhibition. The sketchbooks on display are available to browse through and show the development of the artwork from his initial ideas to the refining of the individual details. Many of the sketches are inspired by anatomical drawings from Wellcome Collection, which triggered memories of his own hospitalisation as a child.
